Very old vines on very poor soils
The age of the vines and their location help us maintain the tension and freshness of our wines, preserving their natural acidity and giving them great cellaring capacity. The result is the maximum expression of the terroir and an excellent balance between factors like minerality, fruitiness and acidity.
Genuinely distinctive vineyards going back more than 100 years (El Roble, Portalada, Rioseco, Moraleja) at Elciego, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa.
The grapes are harvested by hand into crates, cooled and stored at 5ºC for 12 hours. They then go through a selection process before wine-making. Pre-maceration and alcoholic fermentation is carried out in 500-litre vats and barrels, followed by 16-18 months ageing in French oak from the best cooperages (see red wine-making in our blog).
This wine is about concentration, character, power and elegance: a battalion of tactile and aromatic sensations. Blackberry, plum, violet and spices somewhere between cedar and black pepper. Balsamic notes like black liquorice.
Direct and profound on the palate and fully balanced, with the expression of lively fruit all structured with noble tannins. Mature and firm, going on forever.
