The figure of the Guardaviñas (the vineyard guardian) has always been part of the Rioja Alavesa winemakers’ lives.The last one was a well-known figure who everyone called Saltaviñas. This is our tribute.

SOILS

Our vineyards have an almost absolute predominance of calcareous clay soils (brown soils) and basic pH. These soils developed on Neogene and Miocene marls and clays due to colluvial (mainly from the mountains) and alluvial formation. Some developed on sandstone plains and are shallow, flat, stony, limy, and loamy textured. Others are located on slopes, developed on marls; these are moderately deep, with slight slopes and few stones, calcareous and fine loam textured.

CLIMATE

Mediterranean with continental influence. Low rainfall {400 mm average annual rainfall). Dry summers and long, harsh winters with marked thermal oscillations throughout the seasons.

VINEYARDS

A selection of vineyards on different terroirs in the town of Elciego. Red Tempranillo vineyards with more than 50 years of average grown age as free-standing, low vines (gobelet pruning)).

WINEMAKING

Hand-picked grapes by plot in order to vinify each area separately and therefore adapt the winemaking process according to the needs of each single plot. Cold pre-fermentative maceration before alcoholic fermentation at cool temperature (less than 25ºC) in order to maintain the freshness and the fruity  character. Ageing in French and American oak barrels of 225 l.

 

TASTING NOTES

Cherry red, well covered, clean and bright. Varietal bouquet of ripe fruit, mixed with toasted oak well integrated reminiscent of cocoa and vanilla.
In mouth feel is well built, balanced and harmonious, with fine tannins and broad finish.

PAIRING

Grilled chops - veal, pork or lamb - especially with herbs such as thyme and rosemary. Steak, especially in a red wine sauce, Beef Wellington, Roast beef or lamb with a simple jus or a mushroom sauce. Roast chicken, turkey and guineafowl. Simply roast duck - and Chinese crispy duck pancakes.
